Helping others has been proven to reduce stress, remove negative emotions and even increase longevity. It’s also linked with a sense of belonging and reduced isolation, plus it can help keep issues in perspective (which is no small thing when it’s 3am and the dissertation deadline is looming).

For students, it’s also a great opportunity to pick up new skills and gain experience in different sectors. Research has shown that volunteering can develop students’ community awareness and help them integrate into local communities thus breaking out of a ‘student bubble’.

Indeed, 77% of student volunteers said that their understanding of other people has increased and 74% said they established a wider range of friends.

Action: Work with charities to better understand their needs and where students could be a real asset. Share opportunities with students on social media or via email.
