Mongolian students with good English skills have been recruited to help English-speaking tourists in the capital city of Ulan Bator, in a bid to boost tourism and make the city safer for international visitors.
The ‘Student Police’ programme – run by Ulan Bator’s tourism department with assistance from local police – is now in its sixth year, with police confirming that it has been effective in reducing tourist-related crime.
Part of a national tourism strategy
The central Asian country is looking to make tourism a key player in its economy, which is currently reliant on mining and agriculture.
With most foreign visitors passing through Ulan Bator during their journey, students offering English-language information services are an important part of this national strategy.
