Students at the University of Nairobi have created an app to help their peers easily access reliable information about sexual health and HIV, along with other serious topics including mental health, financial concerns, and alcohol and drug abuse.
The Rada app – to be launched this week at Nairobi Innovation Week – was developed in partnership with UNESCO and the Kenya Aids Vaccine Initiative (KAVI).
None of the students involved in the app’s creation are studying technology-related courses. Instead, they are enrolled on courses as diverse as economics, construction management and microbiology.

The app includes 24/7 access to live chat with real-time counsellors, who can offer referrals to students in need, and YouTube links to provide information.
Although only accessible for students at the University of Nairobi at present, KAVI are keen for similar apps to be created and rolled out at other higher education institutions around Kenya.
