Pension-cuts, job insecurity and salary reductions are all some of the issues being protested against at Leeds university.
The three-day strike action is part of an effort to change the job terms of university staff who feel they are underpaid and suffer poor working conditions.
The strikes have disrupted normal teaching across the country but staff and many students say that it is necessary action in order to protect the teaching profession.
Better conditions for staff means better teaching for students so the strikes are potentially a small price to pay against the larger threat of a teaching exodus. Many lecturers feel the job is insupportable given the tough working conditions, zero-hour contracts and low pay which could spell grave news for students in the next few years if the sector can’t attract new teachers, or even manage to keep the current ones.
