Care leavers and estranged students that complete their university courses achieve as much as other students in their future careers – but are hamstrung by bureaucracy and less likely to complete their courses, according to a report commissioned by the Unite Foundation.
The report, delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam, StandAlone and Oxford University’s Rees Centre, combined new and existing data to understand how to improve access, participation and completion rates for care leavers and estranged students.

Students in these particular circumstances find their mental health and wellbeing compromised by repeatedly having to share their situation in order to access the nuanced support and help they need.
The report recommends that universities have one specialist point of contact that these students can come to for tailored support and advice.
