Creating a new culture
Whatever the reasons of the inequality within the system, as a natural product of a creative industry, ethical issues and debate must inevitably spark creative change.

Innovative British student Stacie Woolsey created her own masters course as “viable alternative” to design education. With high costs pricing her out of a Masters degree in design, she approached designers that she admired and asked them to provide her with briefs, then contacted those in the industry to mentor her on particular skills pertaining to the briefs.
By creating an independent curriculum, she was able to work to support herself while studying, something that many design students have been advised against by their tutors. She presented ideas for alternative learning in an exhibition at London’s Somerset House titled ‘Make Your Own Masters’.
Within traditional education structures, lecturers are speaking out about what can be done.
We must work together to eliminate machismo behaviour in schools of architecture. A more diverse profession will only come when we support #WorkLifeBalance

As awareness about design students’ burnout continues to develop, and the reasons behind industry working ethic are examined, students in these industries can only hope that these words effect action – and forge a more positive future for those in the design industry.
