Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD and Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien TD announced their joint plan to develop design standards for Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) in Ireland.

Empiric Student Property is exploring bringing on board a joint venture partner to grow its portfolio of student accommodation. The company, which reported strong half-year results yesterday, said in an analyst briefing that it had engaged PwC to look at options to expand its portfolio.

The shortage of student housing, especially on-campus residence options, accounts for a sizeable share of Metro Vancouver’s housing affordability and supply crisis. Over the next 10 to 15 years, UBC has plans to build 4,800 new student residence beds, including 4,300 at the Vancouver campus and 500 at the Okanagan campus.

Plans exist for over a third of the intended number of student rooms needed by 2030, and most also have building locations. This was stated by Ardin Mourik, director of the National Action Plan for Student Housing. Last year, the Cabinet launched the National Action Plan for Student Housing.

A letter of intent has been signed by the university and private equity investment and management company, AAM15 Management, to build the housing on the east side of UVM’s main campus.

The decision by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to cap residential allowances for university students has short-changed Growthpoint’s student accommodation division, forcing it to rethink its exposure to lower-income students funded by the scheme.
