Huge plans have been put to Birmingham City Council to transform a former supermarket site into two new apartment blocks for more than 800 students.

The development arm of Bouygues UK (Linkcity), working in consortium with Equitix, will provide investment and develop plans for the build. The new accommodation will be positioned behind the Tate Modern art gallery, and will provide up to 2,000 new student rooms.

The £120m scheme, which will also include 19 affordable homes, will be built at Alfreton Road,  just a 13-minute walk from the Nottingham Trent University campus.

Fife Council's North East Fife planning committee unanimously approved the major plans from St Andrews University on Wednesday afternoon.
