Gregory Properties has purchased a strategic site on Foss Islands Road, York with aspirations to deliver against a chronic shortage of purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) in the city.

He joins from iQ Student Accommodation, which is owned by Blackstone, where he worked for three years as an investment and asset manager, focused on assessing and unwriting rolling refurbishment programmes, monitoring and enhancing portfolio performance and onboarding with new investments into the existing portfolio.

Bristol-based Alec French Architects has created 21-storey proposals to redevelop the car-park site with a mix of student-housing and co-living space. The development team for the project, which would be run under the Student Roost brand, says a new 412-space car park is part of its vision for the site, along with around 320 student rooms, 250 co-living rooms and ground-floor food, drink and retail space.

Manchester is one of five cities where the developer has secured sites for its first 4,000 student beds. Moda Living plans to branch into student accommodation development and deliver 10,000 PBSA units over the next five years.

The funding was agreed at Government today, which also noted there is work ongoing with UCD, Trinity and UCC on similar projects, and will support the Housing For All strategy.

Plans have been submitted which would see a prominent Exeter site destroyed by fire three years ago rise from the ashes – as student flats. The large blaze in January 2020 destroyed the Johnsons Cleaners premises on Cowley Bridge Road.

South London homes could be bulldozed to make way for hundreds of student flats. Developer Southwark Homes Limited has submitted plans to flatten seven apartments and build an 11-storey block of flats for 444 students off Borough High Street.

Plans have been filed with the City of Long Beach for the conversion of Park Tower, a 119,287-square-foot office building, into a student housing community serving California State University, Long Beach.
